The Cabin Guestbook License (HBL), version 1.0.

The book

Every Norwegian hytte keeps a book. Guests write in it: the weather, the firewood, who saw the elg down by the water. You are welcome to read the whole thing, show a page to a friend, copy an entry into your own notebook with a note about the cabin it came from. But nobody tears out a page, rewrites someone else’s entry, sells photocopies at the market, or feeds the book to anything that eats books. The book stays with the cabin.

This place is such a book. The rules, short enough to read with your boots still on:

The rules

1. The Book and the Keeper. The Book is the written work this file sits beside — everything in this folder and below it, wherever published. The Keeper is whoever holds its rights. The Keeper grants what follows to the fullest extent those rights reach, and promises nothing about words the law may consider nobody’s.

2. Sharing. You may read the Book, copy it, and share it with anyone, in any medium — each entry whole and unchanged, noncommercially, with credit and a link to where it lives, and with this license traveling along.

3. Quoting. You may quote with credit and, where practical, a link. The law’s own quotation right stays untouched; this clause means to be more generous, never less.

4. Translating. You may translate an entry if the translation admits it is one, names and links the original, and carries this license. A translation is the only changed form these rules permit.

5. Nothing else changed, nothing sold. No rewriting, remixing, or adapting; no selling, no bundling into a product or service, no use aimed primarily at commercial advantage.

6. Nothing that eats books. No using the Book to train, fine-tune, or evaluate machine-learning models; no including it in datasets built for that. The Keeper expressly reserves all text-and-data-mining rights, including under Article 4(3) of Directive (EU) 2019/790.

7. The law wins. Nothing here takes away what copyright law already grants you; where the law is more generous than these rules, follow the law. Moral rights survive everywhere the law keeps them alive.

8. Housekeeping. Everyone who lawfully receives a copy receives this license directly from the Keeper; add no terms of your own. The Book is provided as it is — records, not advice, without warranty or liability. Break these rules and your permissions end at the breach; mend it within 3 days and they return.

The blessing

May you find the cabin unlocked when the weather turns, dry wood by the stove, and someone’s handwriting to keep you company. Sign your name, close the book, and leave it as you found it — on the table, facing the door.
